Feature of the Week: Angelica Hill

Features Posted on %PM, May 21 2012 04:58PM

Feature of the week is officially back and I’m going to start off with a H.S. friend of mine who is just starting out. Her name is Angelica or Angie is what we like to call her. Angelica makes some amazing hoodie scarves, shawls, flowers and etc. I love to show my friends support so enough talk and onto the feature.

1. Tell us about yourself.

I am 29 years old, born and raised in Brooklyn- in a Christian up bringing . I like helping people and catering to people whether through food, hanging out or making them feel good through conversation or word(s) of encouragement.

2.What are you currently doing besides your creative craft?
Beside my craft, I work full time with mentally disabled adults.

3.What do you offer?

In my product line I offer hoodie scarves that easily worn by pulling it over your head instead of constantly wrapping a 10 ft long woven material around your neck to fluff up for warmth. The hoodie scarves cover you head and warms the side of your face as well. Also, my head bands (ear warmers ) are fleece insulated unlike the ones you see in the market that is thin. For my shawls, they are a semi substitute for the hoodie scarf. The end of the hoodie scarf rests on your shoulders and can be pulled down to your arms. While the shawl can be worn just to keep your back and upper arms warm or to cover up your back.

4.Where do you create?

Creativity starts in my mind . It’s funny how one day I was started a hoodie scarf for one of my friends and the pattern twisted and not consistent. The more I kept going around and around the more it looked twisted but cute. At first, it looked like a bow tie and then looked like a SHAWL. I thought to myself I just made something new from a mistake! Hey!

5.Where do you get your inspiration from?

My inspiration comes from looking at other products or clothes and seeing where I can make it. Either to wear or just something new that I create on my own.Another inspiration that I have is just wanting to make people look good. Also, creating things from my own hands or creating something that no one would ever think to wear a certain anyway.

6.How did you get started in your line of business?
How I got started initially was when I learned crocheting in my teens from a lady in my church. She taught me and I never picked it up until 2011 when I needed something to do. All these different ideas started to pop up in my head and they turned well. It started with the hoodies scarfs and it just evolved from there. Also, listening to advices from Gaetana, my family and someone else I know that once worked with a big-time designer telling me to never think small. To try to think big and keep creating. Keep doing what I’m doing and don’t stop.

7.How do you promote yourself?

I promote myself through word-of-mouth and social networks like Facebook & Instagram.

8.What is one of your most important lessons you’ve learned since starting out?

Presentation is everything. That first impressions are everything and feedback or no feedback is always good. Not everyone is going to latch onto your craft but you have to keep going and putting what you create out there. I also learned that it’s important to network and speak to people in the business.

9.Where can we find you online at?
I can be found on Facebook @darknlovely (Angelica darknlovely Hill ) or on instagram darknlovely_xo or you can email me at .

Now you see what I’m talking about. Isn’t her work amazing!!! You guys know how I love handmade products and showing support to small businesses like myself. I’m definitely going to have to get one for next fall and I hope you do the same.
